A congregation grown from thirteen faithful families into a church family that has worshipped together in Perungalathur since 1969.
Our beginnings
From a tiled-roof chapel to the House for His Glory
CSI St. John’s Church, Perungalathur, traces its humble beginnings to 1969, when thirteen households came together to build a small tiled-roof church on Balaji Street. It was dedicated on 20 December 1969, and the Perungalathur Pastorate that grew around it was formed in 1974.
What began as a small gathering of believers has, through the grace of God and the steadfast prayers of the congregation, grown into a church family of several hundred families. After twelve years of prayer and sacrifice, the congregation moved into a new church, dedicated in August 2026 as “The House for His Glory”.
Our Heritage
We are part of the Church of South India (CSI), formed in 1947 through the union of several Protestant traditions after India’s independence. This unique heritage reflects unity in diversity, bringing together Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational traditions into one body of Christ. Our church belongs to the CSI Diocese of Madras and is the mother church of the Perungalathur Pastorate, which also cares for sister congregations in nearby villages.
Worship and fellowship
Every Sunday begins with Praise and Worship at 8:00 AM, followed by the worship service at 8:30 AM, where the week’s programmes are announced. Sunday School, the youth fellowship, the women’s and men’s fellowships and the choir all have a place in the life of the church, and every summer the children fill the church for Vacation Bible School.
